The wizard Vitruvius attempts to protect the "Kragle", a superweapon, from the evil Lord Business. He fails to do so, but warns Lord Business of a prophecy where a person called the "Special" will find the Piece of Resistance capable of stopping the Kragle.
Years later, Emmet Brickowski, an ordinary construction worker with no special qualities, comes across a woman, Wyldstyle, who is searching for something after hours at Emmet's construction site. When he investigates, Emmet falls into a hole and finds the Piece of Resistance. Compelled to touch it, Emmet experiences vivid visions and passes out. He awakens elsewhere, with the Piece of Resistance attached to his back, in the custody of Bad Cop, Lord Business' lieutenant (whose head sometimes turns around to reveal his other side, Good Cop). There, Emmet learns Business' plans to destroy the world with the Kragle. Wyldstyle rescues Emmet and takes him to Vitruvius, who explains that he and Wyldstyle are "Master Builders" capable of building anything they need, both with great speed and without instruction manuals. Years ago, Lord Business rose to power, his disapproval of such anarchic creativity resulting in him capturing many of them. As the "Special", Emmet is destined to defeat him, yet Wyldstyle and Vitruvius are disappointed to find Emmet displays no creativity.
Lord Business plans to use the Kragle (a tube of Krazy Glue with some of the logo's letters rubbed out) to freeze the universe perfectly in place. Bad Cop tracks down Emmet and Wyldstyle, who are rescued by her boyfriend, Batman. He takes them to a meeting of the remaining Master Builders. Unimpressed with Emmet, they refuse to fight Lord Business. Bad Cop and his forces attack and capture all the Master Builders except for Emmet and a few others. Emmet believes the Master Builders' weakness is that their individual creativity prevents them from working together. He devises a team plan to infiltrate Lord Business' headquarters. As Emmet and his allies are captured and imprisoned, Vitruvius attempts to fight back but is killed; with his dying words he admits the prophecy was made up. Business throws the Piece of Resistance off the edge of the universe, sets his headquarters to self-destruct, and leaves with the Kragle while leaving Bad Cop behind. Vitruvius' ghost tells Emmet that even if the prophecy isn't real, Emmet can still save the world. Emmet, tied to the self-destruct mechanism's battery, sacrifices himself for his friends, flinging himself off the edge of the universe.
Inspired, the Master Builders escape and rally with the help of Bad Cop. Soon, Lego people across the universe are building their own creative weapons. The Master Builders lead the charge against Business.
Emmet finds himself in the real world, where the events of the story are being played out within the imagination of a boy, Finn. His father "The Man Upstairs" chastises his son for ruining his father's Lego set by mixing character with the wrong playsets, and originating hodgepodge creations. Finn argues that Lego are for children, but his father prefers to Krazy Glue his perceived perfect creations together permanently, as this is how adults play with Lego. In the Lego world, Lord Business' forces gain the upper hand. Realizing the father will glue all the Lego in place, Emmet wills himself to move and falls off the table, gaining Finn's attention. Finn returns Emmet to the Lego set, where Emmet builds a massive robot to assist his friends before confronting Lord Business. In the real world, Finn's father looks at his son's creations again and finds himself impressed. Realizing his son based the evil Lord Business on him, the father has a change of heart and allows his son to play with his Lego however he sees fit. In the Lego world, Emmet convinces Lord Business that Business too is special as is everyone. Moved by Emmet's speech, Business destroys the Kragle and unfreezes his victims.
With the world saved, Emmet celebrates with his friends, and Wyldstyle, also known as Lucy, becomes his girlfriend. However, alien Duplo beings beam down, announcing their intentions to invade, due to the father allowing Finn's little sister to play with his Lego set as well.

Principal photography began in October 2012, and concluded in November after 42 days; filming took place on location in New Mexico, using digital cinematography. Luttrell and several other Navy SEAL veterans acted as technical advisors, while multiple branches of the United States Armed Forces aided the film's production. In addition, the main actors had three weeks of military training beforehand to prepare for the physical demands of their roles.

In April 1938, the movie opens with a voice (representing the Angel of Death) telling about how the young Liesel Meminger (Sophie Nélisse) has piqued his interest. Liesel, her brother and mother are on a train to meet with foster parents when Liesel's brother dies. After she finds her first book beside her brother's graveside, she is sent to foster parents Hans (Geoffrey Rush) and Rosa (Emily Watson) Hubermann. When she arrives she makes an impression on a neighbor boy, Rudy Steiner.
Rudy decides to become her friend and accompanies her on her first day of school. When the teacher asks Liesel to write her name on the chalkboard, she is only able to write an X, showing that she doesn't know how to read. Later that day, she is taunted by her schoolmates as they chant "dummkopf". One of the boys, Franz Deutscher, approaches her and and dares her to read just one word to which Liesel responds by beating him up. She impresses Rudy and they become fast friends. When Hans realizes that Liesel cannot read, he begins to teach her and she becomes obsessed with reading anything she can get her hands on.
While in the comfort of her newfound parents, World War II breaks out and Liesel and Rudy become entrenched in the Hitler Youth movement. While at a Nazi book burning ceremony, Liesel and Rudy are bullied into throwing books onto the bonfire by Franz, but Liesel is upset by all the books being burned. When the bonfire ends and everyone but she has left, she grabs a book that has not been burned but she is seen by Ilsa Hermann, the mayor's wife. She is met by Hans and he discovers she has taken the book and tells her she must keep it a secret from everyone. One day, Rosa allows Liesel to take the laundry to the mayor's house and she realizes that the woman who saw her taking the book is the mayor's wife and she is scared she will be found out. Instead, Ilsa brings her into their library and tells Liesel she can come by anytime and read as much as she'd like. Sadly, Liesel is found reading one day by the mayor who not only puts a stop to her visits but fires Rosa as their laundress. This places Liesel in the position of becoming a "book borrower" to continue reading.
During Kristallnacht in 1938, Max Vandenburg (Ben Schnetzer) and his mother, who are Jewish, are told by a friend of Max's that only one of them can escape and Max's mother forces him to go. Max later shows up at the Hubermann's house and Rosa and Hans give him shelter. We find out Max is the son of the man who saved Hans' life in World War I. Max is initially allowed to stay in Liesel's room while recovering from his trip and they begin to become friends over their mutual hatred of Hitler, as Liesel blames Hitler for taking her mother away. Max is later moved to the basement so he can move around more, but it is colder in the basement and Max's health suffers. Max stays with the Hubermann's for almost two years and the only close call is when a local party member comes by to check the Hubermann's basement and they have to hide Max. They realize later that their basement was being checked as a potential bomb shelter and they weren't suspected of harboring a fugitive. After this, there are no adverse consequences to Max's stay but he becomes very ill after Christmas of 1941, when the snowman he and the family built in the basement melts and he is found shivering in the cold by Rosa. Liesel helps Max recover by reading to him with every spare moment.
One day while borrowing another book, Rudy follows her and finds out she is borrowing books and also keeping the secret of Max, whose name he reads on a journal that Max gave to Liesel for Christmas. Liesel feels pressured to say more about Max than she intends and Rudy guesses that her family is hiding someone and he swears to never tell. Franz overhears them and confronts them about their secret and Rudy is forced to throw the journal into the river to keep it away from Franz, though Rudy later jumps into the river to save the journal and Liesel realizes she really can trust him.
While working one day, Hans sees a neighbor and friend being taken away by the police because they say he is really a Jew. Hans tries to tell the police that the man is a good German but his name is taken by them and he realizes what a mistake he has made, as this has made them visible. He tells the family and Max realizes he must leave in order to protect them. Hans then receives a telegram that he has been conscripted into the the army and must leave immediately.
On the way home from school one day, Liesel believes she has seen Max in a Jewish refugee line that is being marched through their town and she begins screaming his name, walking through the line. She is thrown off the street twice by a German soldier and finally relents when Rosa picks her up and takes her home. Within a few days, Hans returns from the front because he was injured in a bomb that hit his unit's truck. The family is reunited only for a short time though as one night the city is bombed and no air raid siren alerts the citizens. Hans, Rosa and Rudy's family, excluding his father who has joined the Army, have been killed in the blast. Liesel was spared from the bombing by falling asleep in the basement while writing in the journal given to her by Max. Rudy is brought out of his house by neighbors and he is barely alive. He begins to tell Liesel that he loves her but he dies before he can finish the sentence. Liesel begs him to not die, telling him that she will give him that kiss he has been asking for and actually kisses him, but he has already died. During this scene, Death is heard speaking again telling about how he received the souls of the dead.
Two years later,the girlws ¸¸<¸j Liesel is seen working in Rudy's father's shop, who has returned safely from the war, and she looks up to see Max enter and she runs to hug him. The final scene is Death speaking again, telling us about Liesel's life, and death at the age of 90, as we look over her apartment. Death says that he has seen many good and bad things over the years but that Liesel is the only one that ever made him wonder how it would be to live life.

In 1841, Solomon Northup (Chiwitel Ejiofor) is a free negro living with his wife and two children in Saratoga Springs, New York. He makes his living as a skilled carpenter and fiddle player. One day he is lured by a pair of men (Scoot McNairy and Taran Killam) into a lucrative touring gig with a circus. After a night drinking with the two men, Northup awakens to find himself chained to a floor, realizing he has been drugged and will be sold into slavery.
Northup is shipped to New Orleans, where he is called "Platt", the identity of a runaway slave from Georgia. He is beaten to force him to conceal his identity as a free man and keep the name Platt, and is ultimately purchased by plantation owner William Ford (Benedict Cumberbatch). Enduring his new life, Northup stays on good terms with Ford, who turns out to be a relatively benevolent master; Northup assists him by engineering a waterway for transporting logs swiftly and cost-effectively downstream. Ford presents him with a violin in gratitude. Racist carpenter John Tibeats (Paul Dano) immediately resents Northup, and begins verbally harassing him.
Eventually the tensions between Tibeats and Northup reach a boiling point, and Tibeats attempts to beat him and he fights back. Ender returns home and confesses grief over his actions to his sister Valentine. Their older brother Peter interrupts them and convinces Ender to play a game. Graff and Anderson visit the Wiggin family and offer Ender a place in Battle School, admitting that the final test was to see how Ender would react to his monitor's removal. Ender is the last "launchie" to arrive at the shuttle taking off for Battle School. Upon arrival, the launchies are introduced to Sergeant Dap, who explains how the school's Battle Room works. Ender soon gains the respect of the other launchies. Anderson authorizes for Ender to discover the "mind game", a way for the school to secretly gauge the emotional state of the students in the form of a video game. Ender's form in the mind game, a mouse, meets a giant who offers him two drinks, one of which he claims is poisoned. After finding both drinks to be poisoned, Ender has his character leap into the giant's eye, killing him. Anderson comments that she has never seen anyone do this.
Ender is transferred to Salamander Army, where he meets Commander Bonzo Madrid and Petra Arkanian, who offers to teach him how to shoot during free time. Bonzo takes a disliking to Ender. During their first battle he orders him to hang back and observe once everyone else has entered. Ender disobeys, aiding Petra, and the two formulate a plan to win with a surprise attack.
Ender continues with the mind game, seeing what looks like a Formic materialize and dissolve before him. He follows an animated version of Valentine to a collapsed castle, where he fights a snake and sees an animated version of Peter. Anderson is unable to explain to Graff how Ender's brother ended up in the mind game. Graff gives Ender command of Dragon Army. They climb to the top of the school's rankings. Despite overwhelming odds, Ender defeats two armies at once, including Bonzo's Salamander Army. In retaliation, Bonzo challenges Ender to a fight in the shower. In self-defense, Ender seriously injures Bonzo, who is sent home to recover. Ender threatens to resign unless he can see his sister. Via faster-than-light travel, Ender and Graff go to "a former Formic colony world near their home world", where the International Fleet has established a command base in a former Formic outpost. He announces his intention to program simulations to challenge Ender and tells him about a deadly weapon in Earth's fleet called the Molecular Detachment device. Assembling Ender's core friends from Battle School, together they engage in several skirmishes. "Graduation Day" is to be their final test, a simulation that takes place near the Formics' home planet. Using the MD device, Ender eradicates the forces surrounding the planet. Every ship on the planet rallies to stop him, but he gets Petra a clear shot with the device again, annihilating the planet. Graff reveals that the final simulation was a real battle and that Ender has extinguished the Formics in reality. He tells Ender he will be remembered as a hero, but a remorseful Ender says he will be remembered as a killer.

The first stop of the tour is in District 11, former home of Rue, Katniss' 12-year-old ally who was killed in the previous games. After Katniss and Peeta voice their personal thoughts regarding both the districts' fallen tributes, a man in the crowd whistles the tune Katniss and Rue shared to ensure each another of their safety, and makes the three-finger salute of District 12. Everyone follows the man's example until a Peacekeeper shoots the man dead, leaving Katniss angry, afraid, and upset. Their mentor, Haymitch Abernathy, informs Katniss and Peeta that they must display their relationship for the remainder of their lives. Katniss proposes a public engagement between herself and Peeta, which is carried out and celebrated at Snow's home in the Capitol.
Upon returning to District 12, Katniss warns her close friend, Gale Hawthorne, of President Snow's threat to kill both their families. Meanwhile, Peacekeepers crack down in District 12, causing Gale to be publicly whipped after attacking newly placed Head Peacekeeper Romulus Thread. That evening, Snow announces Panem's third Quarter Quell, a version of the Hunger Games every 25 years that contains a special provision: all tributes are selected from the existing pool of victors. Katniss immediately devotes herself to ensuring Peeta becomes the Quarter Quell's victor, should he compete in the games. At the reaping, Katniss, the district's only living female tribute, and Haymitch are reaped by chaperone Effie Trinket. Peeta volunteers to take Haymitch's place and is sent directly to the train with Katniss, without a chance to say goodbye to their loved ones.
As the games get underway, Katniss allies with Finnick Odair and Mags, both from District 4. Mags sacrifices herself early on when they are attacked by a fog of painful poisonous gas. The remaining trio rests in the middle of the forest where they are attacked by mandrills. During the attack the woman from District 6, a camouflage expert and drug addict, sacrifices her life for Peeta. After they escape the mandrills and rest at the beach, they are met by District 3's intelligent tributes, Wiress and Beetee, and District 7's female tribute, the cunning Johanna Mason. Wiress discovers that the arena is designed like a clock and every hour a specific attack occurs in its designated section. After Wiress' death, Beetee suggests a plan to electrocute the two remaining tributes outside the alliance, District 2's Brutus and Enobaria, using wire and a tree that is struck by lightning at noon and midnight, daily. When the wire snaps, Johanna attacks Katniss and cuts the tracker out of her arm. After recovering enough to track down Peeta, Katniss attaches the remaining wire to an arrow and shoots it at the force field during a lightning strike, destroying the arena.
She awakens in an aircraft with an unconscious Beetee. Upon entering the cockpit she finds Haymitch, Finnick and Plutarch Heavensbee, the head gamemaker, who reveals himself as an ally and a rebel against Snow. Learning she is on her way to District 13 although Johanna and Peeta were taken away by the Capitol, she attempts to attack Haymitch for not fulfilling his promise of returning Peeta home safely. Late at night in the kingdom of Arendelle, 5-year-old Princess Anna wakes her older sister, 8-year-old Princess Elsa to play. Elsa, possessing abilities to manipulate ice and snow, accidentally strikes Anna with her power. Their parents journey into the wilderness to seek the help of trolls who remove Anna's memories of her sister's powers. The head troll, Grand Pabbie (Ciarán Hinds), informs them that if Elsa had struck Anna's heart, it would have been frozen. In order to protect Elsa from the world, she is ostracized from everyone, including Anna, leaving both sisters distraught and lonely. Their estranged relationship worsens when their parents are killed during a storm at sea.
Three years after the death of their parents, the people of Arendelle prepare for Elsa's (Idina Menzel) coronation ceremony. Among the dignitaries is the Duke of Weselton (Alan Tudyk), a tradesman who wants to exploit Arendelle for profit. Excited that the castle's gates will finally open to the public, Anna (Kristen Bell), expresses her hopes of falling in love with someone. Strolling through the streets, she meets Prince Hans (Santino Fontana) of the Southern Isles, and the pair quickly develop a mutual attraction for each other. Despite Elsa's concerns, the coronation goes off without incident, and the two sisters begin to bond at the afterparty. During the reception, Hans proposes to Anna, who immediately accepts. Elsa, however, refuses to grant her blessing on the marriage, setting off an argument between the sisters, which culminates in Elsa's cryokinetic abilities being exposed to the guests.
Panicking, Elsa runs away for the North Mountain, inadvertently unleashing an eternal winter on the kingdom. Lamenting her failure at keeping her powers contained, Elsa declares herself free and decides not to return, and instead uses her powers to create an ice fortress and a snowman. The following morning, Anna searches for Elsa, determined to return her to Arendelle, end the winter, and mend their relationship. While at Oaken's (Chris Williams) Trading Post, Anna meets ice trader Kristoff (Jonathan Groff) and his reindeer, Sven, and convinces him to guide her to the North Mountain. After an attack from wolves, the pair meet Olaf (Josh Gad), the snowman Elsa created, who leads the group to Elsa's hideaway.
Arriving at her palace, Anna and Elsa are reunited, and the former attempts to persuade her elder sister to return. Elsa rebukes her, however, still harboring fears of hurting Anna. As Anna persists, Elsa becomes agitated and accidentally strikes Anna in the heart with her powers. Elsa, in desperation to get her little sister to leave, creates a giant snow creature that throws them out. After they outrun the snow monster, Kristoff notices that Anna's hair is turning white, and decides to take her back to his adoptive family of trolls. After a mix-up, she collapses and Grand Pabbie reveals that only an act of true love can thaw a frozen heart, or else Anna will die. Kristoff races back to Arendelle to get Anna to Hans, believing true love's kiss will save her.
Meanwhile, Hans, who had gone on a search for Anna, brings Elsa back to the castle, after she was knocked unconscious from an earlier skirmish with Weselton's men. Shackled in a cell for her protection, Hans pleads with her to undo the winter to no avail, as Elsa admits that she is unable to control her powers. Anna is returned to Hans, as she continues to freeze. She begs him to kiss her to break the curse, but Hans refuses, revealing his true plan of marrying Anna to seize control of Arendelle's throne. He leaves Anna to die and goes to kill Elsa, whom he frames for her sister's apparent murder.
Elsa escapes from prison and heads out into the blizzard on the fjord. Olaf comes to Anna's rescue and reveals Kristoff is in love with her. The two then travel out together onto the fjord to find him. Hans cuts Elsa off and tells her Anna is dead because of her actions. In Elsa's despair, the storm immediately stops, giving Kristoff and Anna the chance to reach each other. However Anna, seeing that Hans is about to kill Elsa, throws herself between the two and subsequently freezes solid, blocking the blow. After a few moments of grief from Elsa, Anna begins to thaw, as a result of her choice to sacrifice herself to save her sister, constituting an "act of true love".

Three years after the death of their parents, the people of Arendelle prepare for Elsa's (Idina Menzel) coronation ceremony. Among the dignitaries is the Duke of Weselton (Alan Tudyk), a tradesman who wants to exploit Arendelle for profit. Excited that the castle's gates will finally open to the public, Anna (Kristen Bell), expresses her hopes of falling in love with someone. Strolling through the streets, she meets Prince Hans (Santino Fontana) of the Southern Isles, and the pair quickly develop a mutual attraction for each other. Despite Elsa's concerns, the coronation goes off without incident, and the two sisters begin to bond at the afterparty. During the reception, Hans proposes to Anna, who immediately accepts. Elsa, however, refuses to grant her blessing on the marriage, setting off an argument between the sisters, which culminates in Elsa's cryokinetic abilities being exposed to the guests.
Panicking, Elsa runs away for the North Mountain, inadvertently unleashing an eternal winter on the kingdom. Lamenting her failure at keeping her powers contained, Elsa declares herself free and decides not to return, and instead uses her powers to create an ice fortress and a snowman. The following morning, Anna searches for Elsa, determined to return her to Arendelle, end the winter, and mend their relationship. While at Oaken's (Chris Williams) Trading Post, Anna meets ice trader Kristoff (Jonathan Groff) and his reindeer, Sven, and convinces him to guide her to the North Mountain. After an attack from wolves, the pair meet Olaf (Josh Gad), the snowman Elsa created, who leads the group to Elsa's hideaway.
Arriving at her palace, Anna and Elsa are reunited, and the former attempts to persuade her elder sister to return. Elsa rebukes her, however, still harboring fears of hurting Anna. As Anna persists, Elsa becomes agitated and accidentally strikes Anna in the heart with her powers. Elsa, in desperation to get her little sister to leave, creates a giant snow creature that throws them out. After they outrun the snow monster, Kristoff notices that Anna's hair is turning white, and decides to take her back to his adoptive family of trolls. After a mix-up, she collapses and Grand Pabbie reveals that only an act of true love can thaw a frozen heart, or else Anna will die. Kristoff races back to Arendelle to get Anna to Hans, believing true love's kiss will save her.
Meanwhile, Hans, who had gone on a search for Anna, brings Elsa back to the castle, after she was knocked unconscious from an earlier skirmish with Weselton's men. Shackled in a cell for her protection, Hans pleads with her to undo the winter to no avail, as Elsa admits that she is unable to control her powers. Anna is returned to Hans, as she continues to freeze. She begs him to kiss her to break the curse, but Hans refuses, revealing his true plan of marrying Anna to seize control of Arendelle's throne. He leaves Anna to die and goes to kill Elsa, whom he frames for her sister's apparent murder.
Elsa escapes from prison and heads out into the blizzard on the fjord. Olaf comes to Anna's rescue and reveals Kristoff is in love with her. The two then travel out together onto the fjord to find him. Hans cuts Elsa off and tells her Anna is dead because of her actions. In Elsa's despair, the storm immediately stops, giving Kristoff and Anna the chance to reach each other. However Anna, seeing that Hans is about to kill Elsa, throws herself between the two and subsequently freezes solid, blocking the blow.
